VIVALDI Flute Concertos
Il Giardino Armonico – the harmonious garden – has reinvented Vivaldi for generations of musicians with its revolutionary, rock-inspired, fresh interpretations. Founded in 1985, they made their Austrian debut in 1990 at the Jesuit Church in Hall. In the run-up to our 60th anniversary in 2028, they now return with a similar programme. The focus is on the flute in all its various forms – from the soprano recorder to the transverse flute. Initially a fashionable instrument, from around 1710 onwards, the latter gradually supplanted the previously more popular recorder, becoming the dominant instrument by the middle of the century.
This development is clearly reflected in Vivaldi’s Concerti, with his Six Flute Concertos, Op. 10 as the most striking example. Giovanni Antonini, co-founder and artistic director of Il Giardino Armonico, is one of the finest flute virtuosos and a leading exponent of historically informed performance practice at the very highest level.
