When most I wink, then do mine eyes best see,
For all the day they view things unrespected;
But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee,
And darkly bright, are bright in dark directed.
(Shakespeare)

This year our quiet New Year’s Eve celebration features Arianna Savall, Petter Udland Johansen and the Armonico Tributo Consort conducted by Lorenz Duftschmid. It will be a sensual invocation of the night and a musical journey to Spain, England, France and Germany with works by Dowland, Holborne, Purcell, Cabezon, Cáceres, Charpentier, Lassus, Schein, Albert and Hammerschmidt. From Dowland’s grotesque Night Watch and his Lullaby to Purcell’s setting of the famous scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which Titania falls asleep with a donkey in her arms – here Night appears with her retinue – to Couperin’s La Nuit, which describes the Holy Night of the birth of Christ. The various pieces all address the darkness in different ways – melancholy, joyful, enigmatic, besotted with love or shrouded in legend. A fitting way to end the old year and welcome the new.
