In Quest for Life tells the story of Leokadia Justman, whose biography has close links to Tyrol. Her strikingly literary autobiography was written in Polish in 1945 and published in English shortly after her death in 2002. Leokadia, who was born into a Jewish family in 1922, escaped from the Warsaw ghetto with her parents. She fled with her father Jakob to Seefeld and Innsbruck, where they both worked under false identities until they were betrayed and arrested. Jakob was murdered in the Reichenau concentration camp in 1944, while Leokadia managed to escape from the police building where she was being held when it was hit in a bombing raid in January 1945. Having survived the war and the Holocaust, she emigrated to New York. Today in particular, her testimony once more calls for us to be on our guard with regard to democracy, human rights and the current political situation. This joint project employs the media of theatre and music to engage with the vital need to never forget and to resist at the first signs. The musical play reading with actors from the ensemble of the Tiroler Landestheater and musicians led by Timna Brauer marks the beginning of a series of events to be held at various locations that will bring Leokadia Justman’s biography and work to life and ensure we never forget them.
