The young Austrian ensemble inn.wien is making its first appearance here as a string quartet, dedicating 80 minutes to the music of pioneers of the 21st century, with dialogue with other cultures as one of the central themes. Friedrich Cerha’s 1st String Quartet is subtitled Maqam with reference to Arabic melody, which is an important element of the composition. Kurt Schwertsik often explores tango in his works. He also includes the Argentinian dance in his string quartet with bandoneon Adieu Satie op. 86. For Schwertsik, Erik Satie is an important model: You monastic clown who wanted to banish the bourgeoisie from art and disrupt the solemn murmurs of art-lovers hovering in higher spheres with music hall, cabaret and circus. Pauline Oliveros’ 70 Chords for Terry: A Meditation on String Theory creates a sphere of its own. The US composer created the work in honour of the minimalist Terry Riley, who has been on a quest for cross-cultural music since his early days. Oliveros focuses on improvisation, on meditative and atmospheric qualities. Tōru Takemitsu and Rebecca Saunders will bring further artistic inspiration to the programme.
