A pianist playing five different instruments in one and the same concert is a truly rare occurrence. It is a unique pleasure to hear the authentic sound of different works played on instruments from the period involved. Alexander Melnikov, who captivated us with Mozart in 2016 and all of Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues in 2018, will take us on a musical journey from the Baroque through the Classical and Romantic periods and up to the 20th century. What these compositions have in common is their form: the fantasia – formally free and with no strict rules in the Baroque, more strictly composed and emotional in the Romantic period. J.S. Bach’s Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue BWV 903 will be followed by fantasias by Mozart, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Chopin and others played on a harpsichord, on replicas of Walter and Graf grand pianos, and on an original 1848 Ignaz Pleyel fortepiano. An ear-opening evening!
